The Adulting Trap

Care free on bicycles

It was well planned...

Asking us from such a young age "what do you want to be when you grow up?"

It seemed like such an easy question at the time. With obvious answers like "lawyer, doctor, engineer, pilot, nurse". Not one of us said we wanted to just be happy.

We sang rhymes but we didn't want to be composers. We didn't want to be musicians. We didn't even want to be instrumentalists, editors or producers.

We played games and even invented games with our friends but we didn't want to be game developers or web developers.

We taught each other new games and new slangs but no no, we laughed at our teachers because we were sure we wouldn't be teachers.

"Lawyer, Doctor, Engineer, Pilot, Nurse" we said. We were naive.

Now we know better, we just want to be happy. Not trapped in professions or jobs we can do little to nothing about. We just want to happy. Not sad about our lives because "it could be worse".

It's time to throw the proverbial caution to the wind and do what truly makes us happy because we deserve this. We've been sad enough. Instead, let's make our happiness our only priority.

If they call us selfish and childish, it's their cup of tea. They can drink it to their fill. What even is the point of being an adult if you cannot be childish?

Ignore those adults and be a world trotter, a writer, a tree hugger, a puppeteer, a musician, a professional taster, a happy child who is eager to be a happy adult.

We know better now. Adulting is a trap and if we are asked again, "what do you want to be when you grow up?"' our response will be "a happy child free from the expectations of this world while living wild and free because that is what happy  people do".
